8月19日9时，深圳市区发生涉日游行，规模达万人以上（有说2000人；有说1万人以上；有说2万多人），16时强行驱散，至17时10分清场，现场强行带离、训诫40人左右（一说上百人）。深圳警方投入专项警力达6000人，18时警方开始撤勤，只在主要路段留了戒备警力。
深圳市事前并没有批准游行活动，本次游行主要由一些有一定学历的青年人，即所谓的白领，通过网络、短信等现代传播手段组织煽动起来。从15日开始，深圳警方就开始对于工作掌握的挑头人员开展敲打工作，但是没有控制住。
深圳市根据提前掌握的情报信息，确定了“适度表达”的政策。公安机关确定了“沿途护送、分段节流、主动引导、果断处置”的原则，投入6000警力，对游行队伍采取分隔、分段护送的方式，力求稳妥控制。
但是，还是对情况估计不足。因时间跨度大（9时—17时），加之为周日，并且游行队伍途经闹市区和商业区，加入的市民越来越多，队伍的成份复杂化（混进了社会闲散无业人员和对社会不满人员）。同时，多点并发，最多时达4-5个点，且游行的方向不一，但是没有汇合在一起。最后导致游行的规模越来越大，局面有些失控。其间，境外媒体记者到现场采访的也很多（时间长，控制不住）。涉稳重点人在外围被发现后即被带离，未能混进游行队伍参加游行。
此时，混在队伍中的社会闲散无业人员和对社会不满人员开始煽动砸日系小汽车和涉日门店，其他市民也有响应。最后，掀翻、砸坏了几辆日系车，砸了几家涉日门店的广告牌及门窗玻璃（具体数字还在统计中）。在警方驱散游行队伍过程中，激化了民众的情绪，与警方发生冲突，掀翻、砸了3台日系警车。但是全天、全过程无人员伤亡，未发生“抢、烧”事件。
广东的同志建议：（实为深圳在此次事件中的不足之处）
一是要控制住路口，在未形成规模前果断驱散；
二是要防止不法分子乘机打砸抢烧，发泄不满；
三是要防止其他重点人员混日游行队伍；
四是要避免让日系警车到此类事件的现场；
五是要防止多点并发；
六是要准备好诸如体育场之类的大的空间，以便在必要时将游行队伍引进去，强行劝导驱散；
七是要准备好充足的警力，作最坏的打算。
另获悉，19日广州也发生了游行，规模达近千人，现场秩序平稳可控。
