据澳大利亚广播公司引述冯崇义的话说：“中国方面了解加诺德的很多情况。在盘问我时，他们完全没有掩饰对加诺德的愤怒。”
澳大利亚媒体报道还称，中国情报人员曾在2018年3月在悉尼对杨恒均进行过盘问。这些都发生在杨恒均2019年1月在中国被拘留之前。

加诺特曾是《悉尼晨锋报》和《世纪报》驻中国的记者，“2016年由时任澳大利亚总理特恩布尔亲自挑选，与澳大利亚情报机关合作，评估中国政府在澳大利亚的干预活动。加纳德2008年任记者时认识了杨恒均，两人成为朋友。”
冯崇义向澳大利亚媒体透露，他本人曾在2017年在中国被拘留6天，也被盘问了加诺特的情况。中国安全部门的官员还曾威胁他，如果他透露盘问的内情以及中国方面对加诺特的关注，他将会被提起刑事诉讼。

Australian media reports also claimed that Chinese intelligence officers interrogated Yang Hengjun in Sydney in March 2018. This all occurred before Yang Hengjun was detained in China in January 2019.
Garnaut revealed to Australian media that Yang Hengjun once told him that Chinese officials asked Yang Hengjun “about me, our relationship, what I was doing, my work status.”
Garnaut was a China correspondent for The Sydney Morning Herald and The Century. “In 2016, he was hand-selected by then Australian Prime Minister Turnbull to work with Australian intelligence agencies to assess the Chinese government’s interference activities in Australia. Gardner met Yang Hengjun when he was a reporter in 2008, and the two became friends.”
Feng Chongyi revealed to the Australian media that he himself was detained in China for six days in 2017 and was also questioned about Garnaut’s situation.
