A stabbing incident in Australia on Saturday afternoon left at least six people dead, including the suspect who was shot and killed by police, authorities confirmed.

The incident occurred at Bondi Junction Westfield, a six-storey shopping mall in Sydney.

New South Wales Police Assistant Commissioner Anthony Cook confirmed at a news conference that six people, including the attacker, had died. He said the lone suspect was shot by a lone officer.

“She confronted the offender, who by then had moved to the fifth floor of the [mall], while she continued to walk quickly behind him in pursuit of him. He turned to face her and raised a knife. She fired and the man was now passed away,” Cook said.

Eight other people were taken to hospital for treatment. According to Australian media reports, one of the people stabbed by the suspect was an infant.

Cook said the suspect was at the mall, left, then returned and began stabbing people in the center.

The suspect’s motive, if any, and identity are unclear at this time. Prime Minister Anthony Albanese said the Australian Federal Police had not announced whether it was an act of terrorism but called it a “horrible act of violence”.

“I think the Australian Federal Police Commissioner has made it clear that the current speculation… is not helpful. We should allow investigators to continue their work… I have also had discussions with the director-general of the Australian Security Intelligence Organization (ASIO) this evening. The motive is unknown at this stage and of course we will continue to update the Australian public as more information becomes available,” Albanese said.

“The nation expresses its deepest condolences and sympathy to all those grieving the loss of their loved ones and sends our strength to those who are injured,” Albanese said.

“The devastating scenes at Bondi Junction cannot be described in words or understanding and Australians will be horrified tonight,” Albanese said. “This was a horrific act of violence, indiscriminately targeted in an ordinary Innocent people shopping on Saturday.”

The Prime Minister praised the quick work of emergency services on Saturday afternoon.

“We are all thinking of the dedicated doctors, nurses and healthcare workers who will be working through the night to save lives and care for their fellow Australians.

“Today was a shocking act of violence at Bondi Junction, but it was also a testament to the humanity and heroism of our fellow Australians. Our police, our first responders and of course those who never imagined they would face Ordinary people in situations like this. That moment and some of the shots were extraordinary.”
